Weekly courses

30 lessons per year, two hours per lesson

Yiddish for Beginners

Monday 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm Guitele Milchberg

The courses focus on both written and spoken Yiddish. No prior knowledge of Hebrew, German or any other language is required to participate. The first lessons will be devoted to learning the alphabet. 

Second year Yiddish

In-depth study of written and spoken Yiddish.

Third year Yiddish

Around the Jewish year. The students will travel through time : the days of the week, holidays and seasons. Our journey will be accompanied by literary texts, folklore and songs.

Fourth year Yiddish

Yiddish for advanced students

Monday 2 pm – 4 pm (in rotation) Maurice Glazman and Jean Spector (prose) ; Nadia Déhan-Rotschild (poetry)
Prose : the aim of this part of the course is to bring students to fluent reading (and full understanding when reading out loud). We will work on two sorts of texts : simpler texts with few Hebraisms, and more difficult ones, for which a vocabulary will be studied in advance.
Poetry : the lessons leave room for analysis and commentary in the classroom.

Hebraisms

The language of the classics 

Tuesday 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm Yitskhok Niborski
The course is intended for third-year students and above. We will read works by Mendele, Peretz, Sholem Aleichem and other authors from their period, focusing on idiomatic expressions in general, and on the Hebrew-Aramaic component in their language in particular.

Tanakh (in Yiddish)

Thursday 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm Yitskhok Niborski
This course, which has been running for many years, consists of reading the Hebrew Bible in its Yiddish translation by the poet Yehoyesh (early 20th century). The teacher enriches the reading with Yiddish literary texts which were inspired by the bible. This year we will read chosen chapters from the Prophets.

Translation workshop

Tuesday 14h – 16h Batia Baum (20 sessions per year)

Students will work on translating selections from Yiddish literature into French.
